Gershwin’s family from Odessa and Vilnius migrated to New York in 1890. George learned piano and soon was active in New York music as was his brother, Ira.

Gershwin lies astride massive music change. Modern ideas in the late 19th/early 20th century were one influence but so was American jazz. Gershwin wrote in both idioms as did many other composers like Ravel and Debussy but of these only Gershwin conquered Broadway.
