SUMMARY:Guitar music and a capella choir music
DESCRIPTION:Dowland\, De La Halle\, Dag Wiren\, plus unnamed Latin composers for guitarist. \nCanorus was formed principally to sing polyphonic music of the Renaissance period\, and the group is kept deliberately small.  We are pleased to contribute to the John Dowland celebrations this year\, and we are also delighted to be singing some Palestrina – one of our favourite composers!  We are sufficiently broad-minded to include some marvellous pieces by Stanford\, Elgar and Finzi\, and hope you will enjoy listening as much as we will enjoy performing! \n \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Rose and Matthew Mclachlan Piano Duo
DESCRIPTION:Owing to illness we have to revert to a solo concert by Matthew McLachlan. Some of the original music stays but Chopin will now be included. Our apologies for this and we trust you will still enjoy the concert\nRose and Matthew Mclachlan Piano Duo \nRachmaninoff    6 Morceaux piano duet\nLiszt    Paganini Etudes   solo\nRavel    Mother Goose Suite piano duet\nChopin    2nd Scherzo  solo\nScriabin    7th Sonata   solo\nApologies about the Ginastera going missing\nRose and Matthew have been welcome visitors at our Club since their early teens being involved in concerts including Mozart and Beethoven Piano Concertos as well as solo recitals. We remember Rose’s first concert as being deeply affecting – technical excellence but with serious musicality. Matthew most recently gave us a solo performance of massive virtuosity. Tonight’s concert features popular works for both soloist and duo. Finally we get to hear La Valse in Rhyl\, a piece astride two worlds – late Romantic music but with a decidedly modern twist. \nhttps://pianosummerschool.com/profile/name/rose-mclachlan/ \nhttps://matthewmclachlan.co.uk/

SUMMARY:Piano Quartets
DESCRIPTION:Mary Hofman violin Emma Shepherd viola  Rebecca Knight cello Richard Ormrod piano \nBrahms No 3 \nMartinu H287 \nPiano quartets are perhaps the most accessible music form and to get our season off to a popular start\, we have a quartet of superb musicians. Richard and Mary are known to most of us but we also have two other players of repute. Emma Shepherd is a regular Principal Viola with numerous orchestras and uses her expertise in films and games music. Rebecca Knight has similar experience with chamber orchestras but of late has extended her interests to electronic composition and especially in bringing together music and natural world soundscapes.

SUMMARY:Llyr Williams
DESCRIPTION:Beethoven\, Piano Sonata no.8\, in C minor\, op.13 Pathétique \nSchumann\, Kreisleriana op.16 \nChopin\, Piano Sonata no.3 in B minor\, Op.58 \nThis programme is in memory of Michael Tierney \nOur new Club President visits us with a programme that will be highly popular. \nLlyr Williams was an early Muriel Lewis awardee and we certainly made a good choice back then because he has gone on\, becoming a world class pianist and very much in demand. A recent Guardian review of the way he addressed the vagaries in Schumann’s music considered his interpretation to be “profound” \nLlyr has made a considerable mark in his role as a regular accompanist for the Cardiff; Singer of the World competition

SUMMARY:Mary Hofman\, violin\, Richard Ormrod\, piano
DESCRIPTION:Schubert: 3 Piano pieces D946 \nBach: Partita for solo violin in D minor \nBach: D major keyboard Partita  \nSchubert: Fantasie for violin and piano \nMary and Richard bring a delectable programme and in particular I welcome the solo violin Bach Partita. One Partita often appears as a piano version and we have had both the Brahms and the Busoni transcriptions at the Club but here is the original. The Schubert Fantasie is not so well known but having listened to it recently I can’t understand why it is such an infrequent visitor to music venues. \nThis duo has been a major part of our Club programmes\, deeply involved in the Beethoven 10 violin sonatas project both as performers but also instrumental in setting up the 3 new commissions. Thea and Mollie also appear this season. \n

A 2024 autumn residency at Marchmont House in the Scottish Borders saw the Quartet performing and recording a collection of string chamber works by Scottish composer Helen Leach. Enthusiasts for lost and undiscovered works\, in 2022 the Quartet gave the first public performances of Elgar’s Six Fragments for String Quartet and are looking forward to recording them this year. \nSince its inception\, the Quartet has also enjoyed sharing the concert platform with eminent colleagues such as the quartet\, Quatuor Danel\, Peter Hewitt and Irina Andrievsky (piano)\, Leo Popplewell (cello)\, Richard Simpson (oboe) and John Bradbury\, (Clarinet) and working with students. \n

SUMMARY:Lisztomania!
DESCRIPTION:Liszt at last! We had to postpone this special evening last season\, but here it is our final concert and featuring Denis Lavin as narrator and Ellis Thomas as pianist.\nThis Liszt project began two to three years ago when I asked Denis to consider another narration concert (following the success of the first about Chopin). Liszt is interesting in so many ways. Some of his compositions are remarkably forward-looking\, while he was the instigator of a new style of musical event – the recital. Female audience members threw their gloves at him – some even tried to smoke his discarded cigar stubs! \n‘You can only guess at the acclaim he received here; people spoke of nothing but wonders and miracles..‘ \nThese are the words of Liszt’s father\, Adam\, who organised his first concert tours. ‘Lisztomania!’was the title of a rather wacky Ken Russell film about Liszt\, starring Roger Daltry. He borrowed the word from Heinrich Heine\, the German poet\, who coined it to describe the effect of a Liszt performance on an audience.\nLiszt was a composer\, conductor\, virtuoso pianist and charismatic super-star who dazzled and beguiled audiences throughout the salons and concert halls of Europe. Liszt invented the modern concert recital\, devising a repertoire of pieces and playing from memory.\nAs a virtuoso pianist\, Liszt’s performances electrified audiences with the flamboyance of his playing. He was a musical genius who possessed a deeply-felt religious temperament\, giving away huge sums of money for good causes\, in his words\, ‘génie oblige’.\nLiszt may be seen as a Don Juan figure who used his charismatic powers to dazzle and beguile\, not only the women he knew\, but many of the 19th century glitterati. Liszt was attracted to the Faust legend and he himself was a Faust-like character\, a sort of magician – as virtuoso\, composer or conductor. He was at the forefront of European romanticism\, sensitive to the literary\, political and social currents of the age. However\, from a young age\, Liszt was imbued with a deep religious faith and his music reflects his engagement with a transcendental\, spiritual world.\nEllis Thomas makes a welcome return to the Club to play for tonight’s performance. He has worked closely on the recital programme which\, he hopes\, will explore the range of Liszt’s music. Ellis read Music at Cambridge\, then went on to pursue post-graduate studies at the Royal Academy.\nDenis Lavin is the Chair of Rhyl Music Club. Members may recall that he wrote and presented a programme about the life and times of Chopin and he now turns his attention to Franz Liszt. The evening explores Liszt’s career as the first piano virtuoso\, his mesmerising effect on audiences and the conflicts in his personal life. \nRhyl Music Club has commissioned original music from two young Welsh composers: Gwydion Rhys and Ynyr Pritchard\, who are studying at the Royal College of Music and Oxford University respectively. Their compositions use the inspiration of Liszt’s life and work to create new pieces. Here are their introductions to the compositions: \nThe evening promises to be a tour de force of music and words\, revealing the paradoxical qualities of Franz Liszt: a generous\, romantic and deeply spiritual genius. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDenis Lavin\nEllis Thomas

SUMMARY:The Chetham's Big Band
DESCRIPTION:Chethams School in Manchester is the largest specialist music school in the UK and many of our professional musicians come from this famous Manchester institution. Music schools and colleges run courses in many musical genres and this includes areas with jazz influence. Expect a band of thirty musicians\, playing brass\, bass\, percussion and perhaps piano. Music may well be from the jazz or swing eras but to find out you will have to be there on the night – this evening will be something of a departure for our Club.

SUMMARY:Lisztomania
DESCRIPTION:Ellis Thomas – piano\, Dennis Lavin – narrator\n‘You can only guess at the acclaim he received here; people spoke of nothing but wonders and miracles…’ \nThese are the words of Liszt’s father\, Adam\, who organised his first concert tours. ‘Lisztomania’ was the title of a rather wacky Ken Russell film about Liszt. He borrowed the word from Heinrich Heine\, the German poet\, who coined it to describe the effect of a Liszt performance on an audience. Club members may recall the Chopin evening which was presented a few years ago. Denis Lavin now turns his attention to Franz Liszt. Liszt was a composer\, conductor\, virtuoso pianist and charismatic super-star who dazzled and beguiled audiences throughout the salons and concert halls of Europe. Liszt invented the modern concert recital\, devising a repertoire of pieces and playing from memory. \nWe welcome Ellis Thomas back to the Club\, who has chosen pieces which reflect the range of Liszt’s music; Ellis will also show how Liszt influenced later composers. The evening promises to be a tour de force of music and theatre\, revealing the paradoxical qualities of a generous\, romantic and deeply spiritual genius. \nwww.ellisthomas.com

SUMMARY:Young Musicians Evening with Sophia Rahman
DESCRIPTION:Young Musicians Evening with Sophia Rahman and Nicki Pearce\nOne of the highlights of any Rhyl Music Club season is the Young Musician’s Concert. This evening provides a platform for the Club to support and mentor young musicians in North Wales. By its very nature\, this evening will embrace a wide variety of musical styles and genres\, as we want these young performers to play what they enjoy and a re comfortable with. We hope that this concert will give the young people an opportunity to showcase their talents by playing to a large and appreciative audience. Who knows\, but these may be the musicians of the future! Let’s hope so. \nWe want to ensure that the standard of the music we will hear is of the highest quality – all of the musicians have reached the equivalent of grade 8. This is a great achievement in itself and we hope that the concert experience here will be an encouragement for them to go further in the world of music. \nSophia Rahman will be teaching our five young musicians and will be overseeing the final performance alongside Nicki Pearce.
