Baroque Recorder Group
Ernie Hughes, saxophone and Donal McCarthy, piano
Meinir Jones, mezzo-soprano
Concert date: 16/10/2013.
Our music club had quite a tradition in the past of involving amateur performers and for this one-off concert we will hear from a number of musicians who are working hard to perfect their performance for this concert.
Alan Collins brings his recorder group to give us some Baroque music along with traditional Welsh items. Music from the Baroque era features rarely in our concerts and here is one attempt to remedy that weakness.
Donal is a Club member and many of you will have heard Ernie at a Club evening. I have asked them to prepare two movements from the Schumann Op 73 Fantasiestuck; duos involving either cello or clarinet are common with this piece but I have a flugelhorn recording as well. Has it been arranged for saxophone? Possibly not, so come and be the first to hear it in this form.
There is usually a massive difference in the singing voice of ama-teurs and professionals but I had to rethink that generalisation recently when I heard Meinir perform some arias from Mozart operas. Very musical and with a room-filling sound; Meinir is Headteacher at a school in Llanrwst so she has to fit music into a busy schedule.
